GamePlayer is Back; With Some Reasons to be Excited about 2012!
That's right, after a prolonged holiday absence which had nothing at all to do with hundreds of hours of new games like Star Wars: The Old Republic and chipping away at old games on my pile of shame like No More Heroes - GamePlayer is back in business for 2012! But so what? I mean, there is no way 2012 could beat the amazing games we had last year right? Games like Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, RAGE and dozens more made sure it was a year to remember. And who can beat a line-up like that? We may as well pack it in and settle for a year of average hits right? Wrong. While 2011 gave us one of the best years for gaming in a long time, there are plenty of signs that 2012 could be even bigger! And if not that then just as good? And if not that then, well, not as good but still pretty damn good? Whatever I don't need to convince you of anything.
So what are we looking forward to in 2012? Well to start off, everyone is looking forward to Diablo 3, the release-dateless wonder-rpg from Blizzard Entertainment. It's only the third installment in one of the biggest gaming franchises in history, the second one still being played today despite being released over 10 years ago. And signs are strongly pointing to an early 2012 release for this one, so be prepared to sign away your lives people (if some signing is involved in purchasing the game).
Bioshock: Infinite is another must have for this year. The part-sequel part-spiritual successor to Bioshock and Bioshock 2 is breaking new ground for the series, pun intended, by leaving the water and taking to the clouds. But thats not all thats different, with dynamic storytelling and a lead character that can talk (a crazy innovation in gaming), this is one of my picks for Game of the Year - if Diablo doesn't completely steal it's thunder. Want something a little sooner?
Well Mass Effect 3 is just around the corner, taking Commander Shepard back to Earth for a final confrontation with the Reapers. It's a big mission and he will need his friends more than ever - but so will you! With Mass Effect 3's new multiplayer options, it's never been easier to fill your squad with new characters. Or team-killing noobs depending how you choose your friends.
For those of you with more artistic tastes, rumours still abound that The Last Guardian could be getting a 2012 release. The spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus has met with various setbacks, including staff quitting over the project. However the company maintains a brave front where the game is concerned, something that the fans of the series hopefully appreciate. Considering this is one of the most beautiful and moving games I've ever seen a trailer for, we can hope it comes to fruition during this year (if ever).
And that's not all! With great downloadable games like Journey and Alan Wake: American Nightmare, more shooters like Hitman: Absolution and Grand Theft Auto V, and RPG's like Guild Wars 2 on the way - it's sure to be a big year. And that's not even mentioning Metal Gear Solid: Rising, Inversion, Half-Life 2: Episode 3, Far Cry 3 or Starhawk! 2012 isn't looking so bad now is it? And if it still looks pretty gloomy, then your probably just a bad gamer. Sorry, someone had to go there.
