The age old philosophical question, which came first the chicken or the egg, may be fun to throw around for the sake of a mindless conversation of circular reasoning, but when it comes to Sony and Microsoft, we all know who came first. In regards to consoles, Sony was quite a bit more seasoned before Microsoft joined the race, but since then the two have been the cause of hate-fuelled internet anger, with loosely quoted statistics and specs used as a way to ‘prove’ which console is superior.
Well please allow us to add some more fuel to that statistical fire. In May, Microsoft announced that XBL subscriptions had reached 12 million. Although the figure is somewhat outdated and unclear as to whether it includes silver and/or gold memberships, those were the last official numbers released by Microsoft. Now, on the eve of the NXE's release, Sony has stepped up and announced that the PSN has cracked 14 million active accounts. In an official PlayStation blog post John Koller, Sony’s senior marketing manager, broke the news in his happy birthday PlayStation 3 wrap up (the PlayStation is two years old in the US).
This is super-impressive considering that in June, PSN active accounts numbered 9.8 million; quite a few lazy million shy of where they are at now. No doubt, Microsoft will step up to the plate shortly and announce updated figures of their own; particularly with NXE so close to release.
