Say "gamer" in a capital-city pub and people still picture a TV. Check the revenue charts and the picture is a phone. That gap is the most boring argument in games writing and we keep having it because our desks are still arranged around living rooms.

The audience already moved

Mobile is not a genre. It is a distribution system that happens to include Genshin, football managers, and a match-3 that funds a studio's art team. Treating it as a lesser platform is like treating paperbacks as lesser novels. Some of it is junk. So is a lot of the console store.

What changed is quality control at the top. Premium mobile can be excellent. Free-to-play can be extractive. Those are design choices, not destiny. A critic's job is to say which is which, not to pretend the App Store is a carnival we visit for a feature.

What Australian coverage owes readers

Local payment rules, loot-box law, and the fact that a "free" game can be the most expensive hobby in a share house. If we only review boxed releases, we miss the games people actually argue about at work.

GamePlayer's Mobile section exists because the 2020 archive already knew this — Heroes of Loot sat next to console reviews without a permission slip. We are not discovering a trend. We are refusing to unlearn it.
