FromSoftware's expansion habit is to build a new game and hide it behind a named boss. Shadow of the Erdtree continues that tradition with a landmass that does not feel like leftover Limgrave. The opening plateau is already doing the Elden Ring trick: a landmark on the horizon, a dungeon under your feet, and a sense that you are under-dressed.

Scadutree as a second economy

The new blessing system is the mechanical headline. It lets FromSoftware scale the DLC without forcing a NG+ tax on everyone who arrives late. In practice, it feels like a second levelling layer — controversial if you want purity, useful if you want to actually see the content.

Enemy design is meaner and more theatrical. Legacy dungeon energy is back. If you bounced off the base game's open fields, the Land of Shadow looks more authored, more cruel, and more willing to put a wall in front of you.

Preview caution

We have not finished it. Anyone publishing a ranking of "best From DLC" after the first weekend is performing. Our scored review will wait until we have died in every new jail. Early read: this is not a side dish.
