Microsoft's own AU store currently lists Ultimate at AU$25.95 a month. That number is from the official Xbox Game Pass Ultimate page as of this filing. Microsoft has already rewritten the ladder in 2026. If the page says something else on the day you tap subscribe, the page wins.
This is a till guide. It is not a review of a game, and it is not a promise that GTA 6 will ever sit in the catalogue. For the library we actually cover, start at the Xbox archive. For an older snapshot of a good indie wave, see Xbox Game Pass adds a genuinely good indie wave.
The 2026 ladder, in Australian English
Microsoft now sells a stack instead of the old "console / PC / Ultimate" postcard. The live AU comparison we are working from:
| SKU | What we are treating it as | AU monthly, as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Essential | Library on console and PC, fewer extras | AU$12.95 |
| PC Game Pass | Windows library, no console | AU$16.95 (April 2026 restructure reporting; confirm live) |
| Game Pass Premium | Console + PC, cloud, slower/smaller day-one promise | AU$17.95 |
| Game Pass Ultimate | The top SKU: library + cloud + partner extras + the day-one first-party pitch | AU$25.95 |
Those Premium and Essential figures are also on Microsoft's AU storefront next to Ultimate. We are not going to pretend a blog post from April is scripture. Open the Xbox AU store before you argue with a housemate.
What Ultimate is for: you play on a Series X/S, a Windows PC, and sometimes a phone or cloud session when the NBN is in a mood. You want EA Play (and whatever partner stack Microsoft is bundling this quarter) without a second subscription. You actually finish games.
What Ultimate is not for: one FIFA session a month and a guilty uninstalled folder.
When $25.95 is cheaper than a deluxe
Do the ugly arithmetic.
- Ultimate month-to-month is about $311 a year if you never cancel.
- A single first-party deluxe on PSN or a premium Nintendo cart in this country still clears $100+ without blinking.
- If Ultimate gets you two finished games a month you would have paid $70+ for, it is a discount disguised as a subscription.
- If it gets you a sports title you already own and a cloud stream you close after twelve minutes, it is a donation to Redmond.
Day-one first-party is the marketing. It is also how we played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 without performing a midnight retail queue. It is not how you will play GTA 6 in November. Rockstar does not do that.
Call of Duty day-one has already been yanked around in the 2026 restructure conversation. If CoD is the only reason you want Ultimate, read the current benefit footnote on Xbox.com, not a 2024 thread.
Cloud, PC, sharing, the questions Aussies actually type
Cloud. Ultimate's pitch includes unlimited cloud gaming. In this country that means: excellent on a good fibre night, comedy on a congested suburban node. Treat cloud as a preview and a travel trick, not as your archive.
PC. Ultimate includes the PC library. If you will never touch a console, PC Game Pass is the SKU that does not charge you for a box you do not own.
Can you share it? Microsoft's household / game-share rules are the thing people mean by "can I share Ultimate with family." They change, and they are not the same as "one login, four suburbs." Use the Xbox Game Pass FAQ rather than a Facebook screenshot. We will not invent a share method that gets your account banned.
Annual codes. Microsoft's AU default is monthly. Retailers such as JB Hi-Fi sell 12-month digital codes for some tiers — often Essential, not Ultimate. Read the product title. A cheap year of the wrong SKU is how you spend December in the wrong library.
EB Games is the other physical-adjacent ritual: cards, console bundles, the person behind the counter who will ask if you already have an Xbox account. Fine. Still check the SKU.
Trials. Microsoft still rotates AU$1 / 14-day trials on lower tiers. Useful as a test. Useless as a lifestyle.
Ultimate vs PlayStation Plus Extra
We already made this argument in Best PS5 games 2026. Plus Extra in Australia is a catalogue you treat like a library. Ultimate is a catalogue plus a day-one first-party habit plus PC and cloud if you use them.
If the living room is a PS5 and the weekend is Ghost of Yotei or Death Stranding 2, Plus is the subscription that matches the furniture. If the living room is a Series X and a decent PC, Ultimate is the one that stops you buying the same RPG twice.
You do not need both unless you are reviewing games for a living. Most households should pick a cabinet.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Australia: What $25.95 Actually Buys in 2026: quick answers
- How much is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in Australia?
- Microsoft's Xbox store in Australia lists Ultimate at AU$25.95 per month as of this filing (September 2026). Confirm on xbox.com/en-AU — Microsoft has restructured tiers before.
- What is the difference between Ultimate, Premium, and Essential?
- Essential is the cheap console-and-PC library without the full extras. Premium sits in the middle with cloud and a smaller day-one promise. Ultimate is the top SKU: bigger library claims, full cloud, partner subs such as EA Play, and the day-one first-party pitch. Read the live Microsoft comparison — names have moved.
- Can I use Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on PC in Australia?
- Yes. Ultimate includes the PC library. If you only play on Windows and never touch a console or cloud, PC Game Pass is the cheaper SKU.
- Is Game Pass Ultimate worth it versus PlayStation Plus Extra?
- Ultimate wins if you actually finish two or three catalogue or day-one games a month, or you bounce between console, PC, and cloud. Plus Extra wins if your living room is already a PS5 and you treat Extra like a library. Do the dollar maths against a single $119 deluxe.
- Can I buy a year of Game Pass Ultimate in Australia?
- Microsoft's default is month-to-month on the AU store. Third-party 12-month codes show up at retailers such as JB Hi-Fi for some tiers. Read the SKU name on the card — Essential is not Ultimate.
